What is a SAC?

The River Mease is a Special Area of Conservation

The River Mease is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). SACs are strictly protected sites designated under the EU Habitats Directive.

They have been designated because of a possible threat to the special habitats or species which they contain and to provide increased protection to a variety of animals, plants and habitats of importance to biodiversity both on a national and international scale.

There are currently 615 SACs within the UK.

The Habitats Directive is European Legislation. On advice from the Government, we will continue to uphold the standards laid down in the Habitats Directive after the UK Brexit transition period has ended. For more information please click here.
