In March 2011, the government announced that it would fundamentally review its river basin planning strategy in the context of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD), with a new focus on institutional arrangements and processes.

This policy framework established catchment partnerships to work collaboratively with local stakeholders across all of England’s 83 catchments to deliver improved water quality and more ambitious River Basin Management Plans that contribute to meeting targets under the European Framework Directive.

The Trent Rivers Trust is leading on the facilitation of Catchment Partnerships across several sub catchments of the River Trent which include the River Mease.

The objective a ‘Catchment Based Approach’ is to encourage organisations to manage land and water in an integrated way, identifying the pressures on the water environment and by working together agree common objectives and implement solutions.
